麻豆直播 University of Science and Technology (HUST) awarded an honorary professorship to David Payne, chief scientific adviser to the UK Prime Minister and professor at the University of Southampton, at a ceremony on July 18. Zhang Yao, Vice Chair of the University Committee, welcomed Professor Payne and expressed appreciation for his long-standing collaboration with the university’s optical and electronic disciplines.
Recognized globally for his pioneering work in photonics, Professor Payne has significantly contributed to advancing HUST's research and talent development. Tang Ming, Chair of the School Committee, School of Optical and Electronic Information, highlighted Payne’s vital role in nurturing young academic and entrepreneurial leaders for HUST and the Optical Valley of China.
In his remarks, Professor Payne reflected on China’s rapid scientific progress since his first visit in the 1980s, calling international collaboration essential to solving global challenges such as public health and climate change. He said he was deeply honored to join HUST as an honorary professor and looked forward to strengthening ties in research, education, and innovation.
Earlier that day, Professor Payne delivered a lecture titled “From Glass to Google” for over 200 students and faculty. The event was hosted by Chen Jie, Director of HUST’s Office of International Affairs.
